    • Analysts Unmoved By Verisign's .com Victory
The company is also pretty poorly managed and their customer service and support infrastructure seems very outdated. Maybe it makes the company a more attractive acquisition candidate but the current management team seems to lack vision and focused execution.

    • MEMC's Looking to Ride the Solar Wave
There is a longer term demand driver for silicon wafers coming from the need for advanced materials that fall into the "stressed silicon" category. According to active research at MIT these types of silicon will offer the same performance as materials like GaAS but with the superior characteristics of Si. This will create a sustainable profit opportunity for the best producers who can keep more of their capacity moving toward the high end of the quality spectrum versus basic products.

(When I saw the results from this research a couple of years ago I established a long position in WFR which I still hold today.)

    • Time For a Shakeup at Yahoo
I heard Terry at a conference last year and he made it very clear that he sees Yahoo as a media company and not an Internet company. (He sounded just like TWX management before they gave in to AOL...)

There is still a great deal of initiative and technology needed to capture the opportunity on the Internet and you certainly feel it from Google who seems to know what they are doing and even Microsoft although Ballmer doesn't seem too smart about what to do.

Even with a management shakeup it will take a substantial amount of heavy lifting to restore Yahoo to fighting form.

And by the way I am tired of trying to work in an (!) every time I write about them. Given their performance it is entirely fitting to drop the !

    • Bank of America's Free Stock Trading: How "Free" Is It?
Most customers probably don't do this level of analysis. (If they did they probably wouldn't have money at BofA in the first place!)

It's also a huge market move that will put pressure (as if they needed more) on the other providers of online trading. Some providers like ETrade have had some success by cross selling products like Visa which allows customers to earn free trades.

Pressure on prices and demands for increased service will continue in this sector which is good for customers but not great for the providers. Just more reasons to own Goldman Sachs in my view... ;-)

    • Citi: Buy AT&T and Sell Verizon
Maybe true in the short term. I haven't taken a deep look at the stocks. However, it seems to me that the Verizon is doing vis a vis their fiber build out is set the foundation for a long future if increased ARPU and lower operating expenses for their digital subscribers. They should be able to take a customer from 2MB to 140MB/sec over time and charge accordingly for basically zero incremental investment.

Also it appears that customers are making a video decision first and then looking to add voice and other services to the IP. If true consumer behavior it will make having a strong video platform a good advantage in competing for the next round of customers.

    • Ten Things I Hate About You: Weakness and Opportunity in the Telco Sector
Very thoughtful, useful and interesting post! Your voice as a feature notion will work itself into some general research I'm doing on software architecture.

    • Yahoo Finance Embraces Blogs -- Reactions
As a user I can say that Seeking Alpha has done some things that make it the best initiative so far in this space. The first is that they put a layer of editorial judgement and content on top of raw submissions. This combines some of the control features of Slashdot with group dynamic of Reddit.

Google blogs tend to be very dormant and hard to look at or follow at least as I have tried to use them.

It's early in the game but this is the first solution that I have found that works in the financial publishing and analysis space.
