Yahoo Launches Ad Campaign to Lure Searchers From Google

I concur with G and monkeyman. Search shares today is not about relevancy of the engine, but its about the distribution.
Monkeyman mentioned FF browser. Another huge increase is Google's deals with pc makers like Dell, which installs Google crap on new PC's and they're a little tricky to remove if you're not pc savvy.

Its similar to how MSN/IM/hotmail/IE is so popular around the world. they come default with the OS and 99% of the people don't bother to change them.

Disagree with Carlos. I'm guessing that was another a horrible offer for Y! Search where MS is offering very little to essentially kill the company.
It wouldn't do anything for the shareholders.

@echelon: Right on. 1) MS also can't run a profitable online business. 2) Can't even catch Y! in search 3) Have no clue how to brand their search/portal... Live, MSN, windows live, WTF, does anyone know what they are?

Mike is right. This collusion between Icahn and Ballhair is a ploy for MS to steal Y! Search for cheap and kill the rest of the co.
This isn't the right way to do things. MS will piss off the employees big time. You think the exodus now is bad, wait til you see when MS takes control.

Yahoo's YMail - Don't Really Get It

Yes you guys really don't get it. A lot of people do want easier email addresses and many will sign up for it. This will win Yahoo! more users and loyalty, which is very key.
Despite numerous teenagers not using email, email has become such a vital service that almost everyone will need it.
When the kids get into high school or college, they will no doubt need it.
What you think they can get away with, "oh can you send the project or homework to my facebook or text it to me"?

Have you ever seen a resume without an email address or with a facebook addy?

Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought. Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only. Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week. Bearish Calls:

Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend.
